Artist's Description
The sousaphone was not invented by John Philip Sousa himself, but by J. W. Pepper - a Philadelphia instrument maker. and because of suggestions made by Mr. Sousa, Mr Pepper suggested that it be called a sousaphone. This instrument had a bell that stood straight up. The sousaphone with the bell facing forward was made by the C. G. Conn company and Mr. Sousa came to prefer this version of the sousaphone to the one he helped invent.
